When we think about job interviews, we often focus on impressing the employer, saying the right things, dressing the part, and showcasing our qualifications. But here’s a powerful reminder: you’re interviewing them too.
As a Career Coach and Resume Writer, I work with clients who are navigating the job search process, and one of the most empowering shifts they can make is to approach interviews as a two-way street.
It’s not just about whether you're a good fit for the company; it’s also about whether the company is a good fit for you.
In the video I posted today, I walk through five red flags you should look out for during any job interview. These warning signs can help you avoid toxic workplaces, scams, and dead-end roles.
1. Vague Job Description
If the interviewer struggles to describe a typical day or can't clearly articulate the responsibilities of the role, take note. A vague job description often points to poor internal communication, or worse, a company that’s not entirely sure what they want from you.
2. High Turnover
Ask about the role’s history. Was it recently created, or did someone leave? How long did the last person stay? High turnover can signal deeper issues like poor management, burnout, or unrealistic expectations.
3. Rushed Hiring Process
If they want to hire you on the spot, without giving you time to consider, or worse, without even conducting a proper interview, that’s a red flag. A fast-track hiring process might mean they’re desperate (and not in a good way), or it could be a scam.
4. Negative Company Culture
Pay attention to tone and behavior. If the interviewer speaks poorly about former employees or competitors, or if the environment feels chaotic or disorganized, those are signs of a problematic workplace culture.
5. Lack of Growth Opportunities
You want a workplace that invests in your development. Ask if there are mentorship or leadership programs. See if employees tend to get promoted from within. A company with no clear path for advancement might not support your long-term goals.
