Job interviews can feel nerve-wracking, especially when you really want the job. But with the right preparation, you can walk in with confidence and leave a lasting impression.
As a career coach and resume writer who has worked with professionals at all stages of their careers, I want to share three quick, actionable steps to help you shine in your next interview.
1. Do Your Research Thoroughly
Before you even think about what you're going to wear, research the company inside and out. Look at their mission, values, and any recent news coverage. Know where they stand in their industry and what their biggest goals or challenges might be.
If you know who you’re interviewing with, look them up too. A quick Google search and a one-time glance at their LinkedIn profile is enough to give you insight without crossing boundaries. You can also download their profile as a PDF without needing to connect.
Showing you’ve done your homework demonstrates enthusiasm and professionalism.
2. Practice Makes Progress
Interviews are performances, and every great performance takes rehearsal.
Practice common interview questions and behavioral questions using the STAR method:
Situation
Task
Action
Result
Record yourself with your phone or Zoom. Watching yourself helps you catch habits or filler words you didn’t realize were there. Want an edge? Use ChatGPT to generate custom interview questions tailored to the job you're applying for.
3. Come With Smart Questions
Interviews aren’t just about them learning about you. They’re also about you learning about them.
Always have a few thoughtful questions ready to ask, like:
What does success look like in this role?
What are the team’s biggest priorities in the next six months?
These questions show initiative, curiosity, and a genuine interest in the opportunity.
Avoid asking about salary, benefits, or vacation time in the first round. Let the employer bring those topics up or wait until a second interview. Once you’ve built rapport, they’ll be more open to negotiating.
