Have you ever felt stuck in your career, like no matter what you try, something keeps holding you back? For me, that “something” was my own mindset.
Even as a career coach, I found myself stuck in a cycle that was quietly undermining my own progress. I was overwhelmed by self-doubt, constantly overthinking my decisions, and unknowingly operating from a victim mindset. I told myself things like, “No one’s recognizing my value,” or “Maybe this just isn’t meant to work out.” These thoughts didn’t just hold me back, they chipped away at my confidence and clarity. Despite helping others move forward in their careers, I was coming across invisible roadblocks of my own.
The turning point came when I was introduced to Positive Intelligence, a mental fitness framework developed by Shirzad Chamine. This program helped me identify the inner saboteurs, those voices like the Judge, the Avoider, and the Hyper-Achiever that had been quietly steering my choices and reactions. Through the tools and practices it offers, I began learning how to shift out of those patterns and respond with a mindset grounded in clarity, curiosity, and confidence.
Once I started doing this work, I saw how deeply those saboteurs were embedded in our career decisions. For example, the Avoider can keep us from applying to roles where we fear rejection. Our Judge would criticize our every move and project that judgment onto others, too. Left unchecked, these thought patterns not only impact confidence, but they also keep us from seeing opportunities that were right in front of us.
The Positive Intelligence program gave me tools to pause, reflect, and reframe those thoughts before they took over. It reminded me that I am the author of my career story, not a company, not a manager, and certainly not a negative inner voice.
And now, it’s a key tool I use with clients, especially those navigating career transitions or struggling with burnout. Mental fitness isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s the foundation of sustainable career growth, especially in today’s world.
If you’re ready to turn your mindset into your career advantage, I’d love to talk with you about the Positive Intelligence Program and how it can support your journey.
