LinkedIn isn’t just another social media platform; it’s one of the most powerful tools available to job seekers today. But here’s the catch: if you’re only scrolling through your feed or reacting to posts, you're not tapping into its full potential. In my latest video, I share three actionable tips to turn your LinkedIn activity into real career movement.
1. Optimize Your Profile for Impact
Your profile is your first impression. It’s not enough to just list your current job title. Your headline should reflect your personal brand and include keywords recruiters are searching for. For example, my headline includes roles, industries, and the unique value I bring:
“Career Coach | Resume Writer | Higher Education Career Services Senior Director | Bringing Strategy, Purpose, and Mental Fitness to Career Management & Learning and Development.”
Yes, it’s long, and that’s intentional. You have 220 characters. Use them!
Your About section is your career story. I recommend writing in the first person. Remember, this is a space for conversation. Think of it as your digital elevator pitch. Why do you do what you do? What sets you apart?
2. Get Visible
Having a polished profile is a great start, but visibility is key. Share articles, add your commentary, post about trends in your industry, and comment thoughtfully on other people’s content. Follow organizations and thought leaders in your field. Engaging regularly will not only keep your profile active, but it also positions you as someone who’s informed and invested in their industry.
3. Make the First Move
Many people hesitate to connect with new contacts. While LinkedIn encourages connecting with people you know, I believe in reaching out to professionals in your field, with a thoughtful message. A simple note like:
"Hi [Name], I see we both work in [Industry]. I’d love to connect and stay in touch."
—can open the door to meaningful conversations and opportunities.
Bottom Line?
LinkedIn isn’t just a job board, it’s a networking ecosystem. And just like any networking event, the more intentional you are, the more you’ll get out of it.
If you're ready to turn your profile into a magnet for opportunity or want help creating a personalized LinkedIn strategy, I’m here to support you.
