Have you ever felt stuck in your career? Maybe you can’t quite put your finger on it, but something doesn’t feel right. You’re ready for a change, but you’re unsure of your next step. That’s where reflection comes in.
Reflection is one of the most powerful tools you can use to gain clarity and move forward with confidence. It helps you identify what’s working, what’s not, and where you truly want to go next.
As I shared in my latest video, here’s a simple four-step process to guide your reflection and help you chart a path toward a career you love.
Step 1: Ask Yourself the Right Questions
Start by tuning in to your daily experiences.
What energizes you?
What drains you?
Is your current job, industry, or environment truly right for you?
This kind of honest reflection will help you determine whether you need an industry shift or simply a new company or role.
Step 2: Get Clear on What You Really Want
Think beyond titles or salaries. What matters most to you? Freedom? Purpose? Creativity? Maybe it’s growth, stability, or a supportive team.
Pick two or three values that are non-negotiable for you and let them guide your decision-making.
Tip: Journaling and career values exercises are great ways to uncover your priorities.
Step 3: Research and Explore
This isn’t about applying for jobs just yet. Instead, use job boards and networking conversations as tools for curiosity. Notice what roles or responsibilities catch your attention again and again. Talk to people in fields that spark your interest and learn more about their day-to-day realities.
Step 4: Take One Small Action
Clarity comes from action. Choose one step to move forward:
Set up an informational interview
Register for a class or webinar
Start updating your resume to better reflect your goals
The key is to start small; momentum will build from there.
Final Thoughts
If you’re feeling stuck, reflection is the best place to begin. It helps you move from uncertainty to intentional action.
